Sky Cinema The Matrix Collection

Motion

On this project, we really wanted to give a nod to the world-renowned film franchise and add an extra layer of intrigue to what would otherwise be a clip-based promo.

So we developed and incorporated the binary/code rainfall synonymous with the Matrix films and co-opted it as our transition device.

I spent some time looking firstly at the composition of the original code rainfall and then possible was of executing, discovering that the original instance of the effect used in the matrix itself uses Japanese letterforms.

The earlier examples of my development work on this effect can be seen below and use C4D's thinking particle system to control the birthrate and letterforms on view. Though this technique was quite legible it was very complex and therefore difficult to flex beyond the original use case of falling letterforms. As the idea developed into a transition from one shot into the endboard it became clear that Trapcode Form would be a faster more efficient means of execution allowing us flexibility in the build to repurpose the effect from 2 different versions of the promo as well as the speed of execution keeping us on track for the project deadline.

The final transition i think sufficiently represents the Matrix franchise while also cleverly transitioning the viewer from the body of the edit to the endboard CTA.
